How To Feel Grateful When Times Are Tough

This article was originally inspired by Thanksgiving and seeing everyone's social media posts about being thankful. Ironically, the outpour of positivity in the days leading up to Thanksgiving reminded me that for many people, it’s not so easy. Festive holiday seasons can also stir up intense emotions like sadness and loneliness.

There are many reasons you may struggle to feel sincerely thankful, especially when times are tough in business. Whatever your reason, expressing gratitude for the things that you do have will help you improve how you feel, even if you are in a low and lonely place.

A Couple Tips to Stay Grateful

  • Get Back to Basics

There's sort of no point in saying, “I'm grateful for everything and the world is abundant,” if you don't feel like that at all. Be honest with yourself, and find basic things that you can genuinely feel thankful for.

Examples of the basics:

  • Just to be inside when it's freezing outside. You can start by saying, “I’m grateful I have a roof over my head.”
  • The people who care for you, even just someone who'd reply if you sent them a text, or someone who’s made a special impact on your life.
  • The last meal you ate.

There are many simple things we can all be grateful for.

  • Challenge Yourself

There's nothing worse than feeling stuck and not knowing why. Challenge yourself to think about what brought you into that space by asking the following questions:

  • What's causing me to feel so low?
  • Why am I sad?
  • Why am I angry?
  • What's driving these negative feelings?

If you can actually understand the source of your pain, be grateful for that clarity.

Once you're in a place of clearer understanding, you can then challenge yourself to ask, “What can I do to start fixing these problems?” Maybe there’s someone you need to reach out to for help. Or maybe there's a particular skill you could work on.

What can you do to help yourself?

Shiny Object Syndrome

While we’re talking about Thanksgiving, I want to add my thoughts on Black Friday, because every year, my inbox gets flooded with Black Friday SALE emails!

My basic rule is this: Protect yourself from “Shiny Object Syndrome.”

Delete all the emails that tempt you to buy what you don’t really need. If you do really need something, like the absolute next thing to take your business to the next level, the sale is a great opportunity to take advantage of. If you’re not sure if you really need it, first ask yourself, “Have I already fully implemented everything I already have?”.
Applying a bit of good, old-fashioned self-control here will prevent you from spending money recklessly and adding more courses to your never-ending To Do list.

Good luck navigating holiday seasons all year round, and remember to stay grateful!
