Keeping Your Eye On What Matters

Are you chasing a really ambitious goal? Maybe you're going after a particular profit target, or you're in corporate and you're trying to get to that next level, get your next promotion. Whatever it is, you’re working really hard and going after something that really matters to you. This is for you.

In the context of chasing after a really big goal, the best advice I can give you is to remember to take care of and prioritize your health and wellbeing. I’m talking about both physical and mental health, which includes working on your mindset.

Often the reason we chase after something that's financially-incentivized has to do with a quality of life metric; it’s about the type of lifestyle that you'd like to have that money can bring.

If you're working really hard on going after your goals to the point that you're working yourself into the ground,  you end up putting your health at risk and jeopardizing your ability to enjoy that lifestyle that you're working so hard to achieve.

Don’t Let A Cold Be The End of You

Sometimes you can work so hard that you can reach the point that it gets hard to just recover from simple things like a cold. When you’re driven by stress, your immune system gets so rundown, that your body ends up needing a really long break just to recover.

Ideally, you want to never get to this point, where you end up needing to take a break from absolutely everything. So take care of your health.

The Pieces of Well-Balanced Wellbeing

  1. Diet
  2. Exercise
  3. Mental health care and mindset work

The Challenges of Balance

Life throws curveballs, and sometimes you won’t be able to give 150% attention to your ambitions like you’d like, because there’s just too much else to do.

For example, moving house: Packing initially, the actual move, unpacking, lots of cleaning and all sorts of challenges. Amongst all of that, it's really hard to maintain and sustain business activities and commitments. It gets really hard to do your best at all of that, and cope with the stress of it all. And so something’s gotta give.

How to Cope

You’ve got to recognize your limits. You can’t be everywhere at once.

If you need to take a break, I don’t suggest disappearing or bailing on your commitments. You still want to honor those. But if you can simply let people know in a tactful and professional way.

If there's a way that you can stretch and fit everything in without taking a break, just remember to prioritize. Pause one thing, get another thing done, and focus on the task you’re doing at the time you’ve decided to do it.

Give yourself a break to recharge when you need it, so you can bring your best energy back to your goals and ambitions.
