What 17 Years of Accounting Taught Me About Money Mindset

Seventeen years in accounting taught me many things. The most important lesson I learned? Money mindset is everything.

Who Gets Promoted?

For the majority of my accounting career, I worked with the chief financial officer (CFO) and a finance team of over 100 people, managing billions of dollars of revenue and expenses for the Australia’s largest media company.

With a finance team that big, the structure looks a bit like a pyramid: you have the CFO at the top, followed by several directors, followed by different levels of managers, followed by many analysts. A structure like this creates the popular circumstance of more employees wanting promotions than there are promotions available.

So what makes some people rise up and get promoted while others stay stuck at the same level for years? What did those of us who got promoted have that the ones left behind didn’t?

The simple answer: A strong money mindset.

My Story

My own money mindset is something I had to work on and develop consciously, like I now coach to do.

In the early part of my career, although my accounting skills were strong, my money mindset was weak. I couldn't work out why other people around me were progressing and I wasn't.

So I started working on my personal development with my own coach. That’s when I realised that I had money blocks that were keeping me stuck.

Once I could see them, I started working fast to clear them. In a very short period of time, I was on the fast track to the leadership team! The promotions that were once the object of my desperate desire just started to come easily and naturally.

That’s when I learned for myself: Money mindset really underpins everything.

Do You Self-Sabotage?

For many people, one part of them really wants that next promotion, but another part of their mind, a much stronger part, says: “You can't do it. You’re not worthy. That’s not you.”

These deeply held internal beliefs cause people to behave in such a way that they're always viewed as junior analysts. It might be through the way they communicate or how they approach tasks. A classic example of this is the phrase, “That’s above my pay grade.” It’s a way of saying, “I’m not going to do that unless you pay me more to do it.”

By being unwilling to do a task above your current position, it’s hard for anyone to envision you in that higher position. On the contrary, when you willingly accept and even pursue tasks beyond your current role, you not only show others what you’re capable of, you also start to make the Law of Attraction work to attract you’re next promotion because you’re already in sync with that next leadership level.

But don’t just take my word for it. Richard’s story is another great example of what you can achieve with a strong money mindset.

Richard’s Story

Richard was an analyst who had been stuck at that level for many years, even though he was smart and worked really hard.. He got so disheartened he ended up quitting. A few years later, I checked in with Richard and offered him a deal. The deal was that if he came back and worked for me, I would personally invest in his development and help him achieve his goal of being a commercial manager.

Over the next year, we worked really hard on his money mindset and busted through some major self-limiting beliefs. Once Richard realised he was indeed worthy of being a commercial manager and making great money, his behaviour at work totally changed - and pretty much overnight. Richard started to behave like a manager; he let go of the desperation to get promoted… and senior managers started to see him as a rising star.

What happened is next is really fascinating. I ended up getting promoted myself, and so I had to leave that team. But the personal development work we had done together was so powerful that within a couple of months, Richard’s new boss saw his potential and he did get that promotion he’d wanted for all those years!

Although this is a story about getting promoted in the corporate world, the exact same principles apply for entrepreneurs. If you’re struggling to get your business to where you want it to be, the first thing you need to look at is your money mindset. Until you overcome your money blocks, you’re going to keep sabotaging your results over and over again.
